Mudpie 101

Mix water with some dirt
Till it's sloshy and sloopy-thick;
Use one of Mom's kitchen spoons
Or, if nothing else, a stick.
Moosh it, take out any rocks,
And stir it to perfection.
(Also watch for small bugs
That might escape detection.)
Feel free to mix in grass;
It adds texture and makes it yummy.
But leaves are not the best;
And pine needles make it all crummy.
Pour it in a pan,
Like one for cake or bread.
Aluminum is best--
At least that's what my mom said.
Now bake it in the sun
Till it's crusty-hard on top,
Then remove it from the pan
With a gentle, swooshy "plop."
If it cracks a little, no problem--
It's still a successful pie.
But breaking in lots of pieces
Is a sign that you baked it too dry.
It helps to check it while baking,
So as to prevent excess cracking
And make a most excellent mudpie
That's ready to be served for snacking.
You can add a leaf for garnish,
Or even a flower or two.
Now go get some friends who'll be happy
To partake of your mudpie with you.
